ABOUT US

Los Caballos Luna

Juni 2012 – Een groep van 15 verwaarloosde paarden. Uitgehongerd. Uitgeput.
To stand by idly while this happens, and keeps happening, is not an option for Laura. She promises the mare to help all her kind in need, wherever she can.
Foundation Horse in Need Spain (= Paard in Nood Spanje) is born.

In Andalusië, Spanje, bevindt zich de grootste paardenopvang van Europa: “Los Caballos Luna”, het opvangcentrum van Paard in Nood Spanje.

In a 175-hectare nature park with abundant trees and lakes, the horses, mules and donkeys live in semi-wild herds. Here, they finally live as horses should - free to enjoy life and grow old without fear. Some recover in our small clinic; others stay here forever, being too old, blind or traumatised to move on. For these animals, the suffering is over.

We stand ready for every horse in need, working tirelessly to prevent suffering and improve equine welfare. But we cannot do this alone. Our foundation relies entirely on donations and gifts; without outside support, we cannot help these horses.

Every pound makes a difference. Together, we can give horses in need a future. Lend your support, and give them the chance of a better life.

AT A GLANCE

What we do

Horse Rescue

Since 2012, Horse in Need Spain has provided sanctuary for horses suffering severe neglect.

Preventive Rescue

When possible, we immediately rehome healthy horses or offer temporary aid with feed and veterinary care.

Education & Awareness

We actively educate owners about responsible equine husbandry practices.

Animal Welfare Legislation

We campaign to strengthen legal protections for equine welfare. in Spanje.

Donations save lives

Horse in Need Spain receives no government funding in either the Netherlands or Spain, relying entirely on donations and gifts. We're a recognised foundation by the Dutch Tax Authority with ANBI status. Did you know your donations may be tax-deductible?

Remote adoption

For horses too old or unwell to be rehomed yet, we seek adoptive owners, as the foundation cannot fund the intensive care these horses often require. You can adopt a horse remotely from just €10/month.

‘PAARD’ VAN DE MAAND

In 2022, Chispa arrived as a tiny baby deer, less than half a day old. Her mother had passed away, and some caring people brought her to the foundation, hoping we could give her a chance at life. With bottle feedings, sleepless nights, and above all, a lot of love, we raised her. Thanks to Lola, we learned that a fawn needs to be stimulated to pee and poop, just like a kitten or a puppy. From that moment on, Chispa didn't just become a rescue animal, she became a true member of the family and a part of the dog pack.

As soon as something new happens, Chispa just has to investigate. An open gate? She has to go through it! A fresh heap of sand? She has to play in it, preferably with Holly. Holly is actually the only one who truly respects Chispa. Chispa isn't just a bit of a rascal, though. She’s also fiercely loyal and friendly. She happily trots along during the checks in the nature park and wants to be part of everything. She’s a deer who just has to stick her nose into everything, always out on an adventure, making sure there’s never a dull day.
